Violence

The Surgeon General's Report on Youth Violence notes, "The most important conclusion of this report is that youth violence is not an intractable problem. We now have the knowledge and tools needed to reduce or even prevent much of the most serious youth violence, with the added benefit of reducing less dangerous, but still serious problem behaviors and promoting healthy development."

The report also goes on to note," the most urgent need is a national resolve to confront the problem of youth violence systematically, using research-based approaches, and to correct damaging myths and stereotypes that interfere with the task at hand".

1. The National Institute of Mental Health has an excellent resource area on the topic of children and violence. It features factual information as well as references to available resources.

2. The Center for the Prevention of School Violence serves as a resource for dealing with the problem of school violence. The center focuses on, "ensuring that schools are safe and secure so that every student is able to attend a school that is safe and secure, one that is free of fear and conducive to learning." Their safe school pyramid is innovative and effective.

3. The American Psychological Association has an online guide for school violence geared to teens. " To help youth proactively address the problem of violence, APA and MTV have teamed up to provide youth with information about identifying the warning signs of violent behavior and how to get help if they recognize these signs in themselves or their peers."  This guide is helpful and very informative.
