MedicationsPsychiatric medications have radically altered the previously dim prospects of recovery for many mental disorders. As new medications enter the marketplace with growing frequency, we receive numerous requests for information. We are happy to share the resources that we have found, but must again remind you that it is no substitute for medical advice from a licensed professional. Here are some of the resources: 1. There is a great medication resource at the National Institute of Mental Health. On their web site, there is an entire section on psychiatric medications including clinical trials, research news and printable materials. A publication is available called, "Medications". It is described as, "A booklet designed to help persons who use mental health services to be well informed about medications for mental illnesses. Offers descriptions of mental illnesses and the medications prescribed for them. Contains an alphabetical listing of medications". Click here to go to the Medications Menu at the NIMH.
2. The RxLIst - Internet Drug Exchange has information on over 4,500 popular drugs in plain English. It provides detailed patient information on dosages, side effects, warnings and precautions. This is a great reference if you are searching for information on a particular medication,. Click here to go to the RxList.
3. The American Psychiatric Association has an informative pamphlet, "Children, Mental Illnesses and Medicines", that offers a review of the medications commonly prescribed to children. Click here to go to the APA pamphlet. They also have a pamphlet entitled, "Psychiatric Medications". http://www.psych.org/public_info/PDF/medicat.pdf
