Suicide1. The federal government has mapped a plan aimed at preventing suicides by encouraging the troubled to seek help and making sure treatments and medicines are there when they do. "There are few who escape being touched by the tragedy of suicide in their lifetimes," said Surgeon General David Satcher, who released the plan Wednesday, May 2, 2001. 2. The National Institute of Mental Health calls suicide a, "a complex behavior usually caused by a combination of factors. Research shows that almost all people who kill themselves have a diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder or both, and that the majority have depressive illness. Studies indicate that the most promising way to prevent suicide and suicidal behavior is through the early recognition and treatment of depression and other psychiatric illnesses." The web site is a wonderful resource for many topics on mental health. Click here to go to the NIMH Suicide Menu.

Suicide Prevention Program helps youth find a place or person to go to

let someone know he was in trouble and needed help. Click here to go to the Yellow Ribbon web site.
4. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to advancing our knowledge of suicide and our ability to prevent it. This organization has research based suicide prevention policy.
